Lisa Jackson
Painting and Drawing. Acrylic, ink, oil, charcoal and collage on canvas, board and paper.

Painting is a wonderful, often intense, way to spend your time. When things are going well, it's a glorious experience.  When things are not going well, you question your existence and rail against your decision to take up such an unsuitable occupation!

Despite the 'risks' I show up in the studio most days because I am curious. I never know what I'll discover or what the outcome of the day's work will be. As time goes on I get braver. I like to experiment with materials and surfaces. I like acrylic paint, ink, oil paint/cold wax, collage, stencils, encaustic (oil/hotwax). I paint on paper, canvas (stretched and unstretched), wood panel.

Recently I completed a series of paintings on plywood. Plywood is interesting because it collaborates. I use layers of acrylic washes and the markings, the texture, the colour of plywood doesn't sit idly by but is part of the work.

Now I am using a completely different surface, Yupo.  It is a paper like surface, the whitest of white, non-absorbent and very tough.  It's also unpredictable, to me, at this time, anyway.  A lot of experimentation. I have found that I can use sandpaper and sand the crap out of the painted surface and get some pretty interesting results. A lot more work to do there.

Most of my work is abstract or partially abstract in nature. I like the wide open aspect of the abstract but then it's also fun to rein things in a bit and combine the abstraction with representation of a thing or a space.  I take a lot of photographs. I love taking photographs.  I don't usually go to them for a direct source for a painting but they do influence my thinking about subject matter or themes.

I love the experience of painting and the process. I like that there is no certainty in it. I only know when I get there that I have arrived. I enjoy that mystery and opportunity to discover. I like the poetry of that.
