I had promised myself that when I retired I would take up painting again so after I retired I began my search for studio space and after a couple of false starts I found a studio. It was so daunting at first. I suppose I'd envisioned an immediate, graceful leap into masterpiece production and was horrified by how intimidated I was and how awkward and fearful! That first face to face with a blank canvas! Shudder. But I just kept at it. I got into the rythym by taking a course at the local art college and found that helpful. I looked around for motivation and inspiration to continue. My fave was a clip of Chuck Close with the advice not to sit around waiting for the big bang of inspiration. It won't happen. Just show up. So I do.

My art is first of all for me. It's an extension of me so it has to feel right, authentic. I have to find it interesting. I have to feel comfortable attaching my name to it. I don't expect that my work will appeal to many people so am always delighted when it does.

I take lots of photographs. I really enjoy them. I don't usually paint from photos but often they suggest a subject or a direction and eventually evolve into a painting.
